Not only this, different types or organizations have different requirements and your remit as a systems engineer could change according to your employer\'s need. As computer technology increases in complexity and technology convergence occurs, roles become more and more specialized in order to cope with the quantity of knowledge and experience required to solve particular problem sets. In general terms, systems engineers are responsible for designing, testing, and evaluating, computer software and hardware, systems and related peripherals. Even now, there is a divergence between professionals specializing in computer software and computer hardware engineering.

Courses in Systems Engineering
This is a difficult question to answer since many different schools offer different curriculums. Some of these may be suitable for what you want to do; others may not. It is crucial that you investigate exactly what is going to be taught before making a decision since not all programs are the same! Typical fields of study may include: programming, computer architecture, human-computer interaction, software engineering, web technologies, operating systems, and multimedia to name a few. Depending on individual roles, some employers may be happy to take people on with diverse backgrounds. Most systems engineers hold a bachelors in math, computer science, or even information systems. You may find that quite a few of your colleagues hold higher degrees in business administration or a technological field.

Job Prospects in Systems Engineering
In spite of widely publicized job losses in certain sectors, this field is still expected to be one of the ten fastest growing industries according to the Bureau of Labor.
