Teaching Training

Taking responsibility for the education of children is a serious business. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that teachers are expected not only to educate but to be educated. In fact, all teachers in US public schools must obtain a license in order to teach. Teaching training starts with an education degree which is followed by completion of an approved teacher training program.

What teaching training education degree will I need?
You require at least a bachelor level teaching training education degree to get started. Programs will vary, but in general you will combine some liberal arts courses with a major in your main interest and classes in education and teaching. Some states require you to obtain a master?s education degree after you begin teaching. If you already have a bachelor?s degree, but lack specialized teacher training, many states can offer an alternative route to earning your license. You should check the requirements in the state where you intend to work. Most states require that you pass an exam and demonstrate classroom teaching ability before granting a license.

What is my job outlook with a teacher training education degree?
Teachers held nearly four million jobs in 2002 and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the job outlook for teachers should be excellent. While opportunities will vary by area and subject, many teachers will retire over the next ten years, and this will create a large number of openings, especially in secondary schools. Competition for the best jobs will be strong, however, so your teaching training education degree will be vital in maximizing your prospects.
