More Information
Patient care technicians work in a healthcare environment under the supervision of a healthcare professional. They have responsibility for many of the clinical procedures that are used in healthcare, including performing ECGs, catheterization, taking blood samples and other processes. They also undertake some of the administrative work of patient care, including keeping patient records.

If you want to work in a team of healthcare professionals as a patient care technician, you need to train in the skills and medical background knowledge that will enable you to do this job. You may decide to take a preliminary program in patient care technician training, or you may decide to train while you are working, studying both in the classroom and under supervision in your place of work.

You will gain certification as a patient care technician, giving recognition of your skills and abilities. Patient care technicians work in hospitals and clinics, nursing homes and in physician practices, wherever their skills are needed. You may decide to work on a contract basis, gaining the opportunity to work in many different establishments and to travel if you want to. Your skills will be in demand as the healthcare industry is going through an unprecedented period of growth, as an aging population creates a demand for geriatric healthcare services and help to maintain a good quality of life.
